Linking students and staff to books and the world

I have been eating up books lately. I just finished Marked: A House of the Night novel (Book 1)-- a great new vampire book. Loved it!
I also read Please Stop Laughing at Me, a memoir about one girl's experience of being truly bullied through school. It was so awful to see how some people treat others even when they don't want to because they're afraid the pack will turn against them.
I am finished Homeboyz last week by Alan Sitomer - he wrote Hip Hop High School. It was about a driveby shooting and what happens to the victim's family and friends afterwards. Very good, I think a lot of kids will like it. I picked up an extra copy yesterday at Border's.
I'm reading Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead now. I just started it.

I just read Strays by Ron Koertge. It was a very good story about a boy whose parents are killed and he gets sent to the foster care system. In the life he had with his parents, he worked at the family pet store and his mother was a little nutty-- particularly about animals. For some reason, he was able to understand the animals - almost like he talked to them. Things definitely change as he gets comfortable in his new world and makes a new start.

I'm reading Breaking Dawn right now. I'm almost half way through. I also read Wake and All we know of heaven. All we know of heaven is sad but I liked it. I'm also reading The Catcher in the Rye for Ms. Schiff's class.

I just finished Multiple Blessings by Kate Gosselin. It was all about the Jon & Kate plus 8 family. It was great to read more about them.
I also read Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson. That was so intense. It was all about a girl who is battling anorexia-- her best friend dies from Anorexia/Bulimia.
Michelle- I'm glad you enjoyed All We Know of Heaven. It was terribly sad, but a good story.
I'm also reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman--it is very good.

I don't know about all of you, but I am just reading one thing after another. I keep forgetting what I've read. I recommend it to a student and then forget I read it... Kind of embarrassing-- I read a book told a kid about it and about a week later I found it on my desk and was checking into it thinking I should read it-- the kid reminded me that I had just read it and sure enough I had... That's when you know you've been reading too fast and not savoring it enough...
I'm reading a couple of books right now. The first, Columbine, is about the tragedy at Columbine HIgh School and the other is The Light of Day by Graham Swift. I am riveted by both of them. Columbine isn't easy to read but it is very interesting and just trying to understand how such a tragic event could happen makes it impossible to put down.
The second book, is very good, although it is a little hard to follow.
I also just read the book Jumped by Garcia. It is about a girl that just happens to irritate a girl who has an attitude problem. That girl jumps her and life is not the same.
I also just read In Ecstasy about a couple of girls who decide to try Ecstasy and the path it takes them. Each one assumes things about the other friend and their lives are dramatically changed.
I'll have to check out the pile of books on my desk and let you know some others that I've read but forgotten (momentarily). Let me know what y'all are reading.
